Perfect Sip: Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew with an Extra Shot of Espresso

Why It Works:
Sweet, bold, and just a touch chaotic—this drink is pure Emma and Charlie energy. The vanilla sweet cream brings the warmth and charm of a classic rom-com, while that added shot of espresso gives it the jolt of creative (and emotional) chaos that fuels their partnership. It’s comforting yet unpredictable, just like falling in love when you least expect it.

About the Book

Emma Wheeler has spent her whole life believing in the power of a good love story. She dreams of writing romantic comedies that make people believe in happy endings—but for now, she’s juggling that dream with taking care of her ailing dad. When a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity lands in her lap—to help rewrite a script for her screenwriting idol, the infamously grumpy Charlie Yates—she can’t say no.

But meeting your heroes isn’t always what you expect. Charlie thinks rom-coms are unrealistic nonsense and has zero interest in love—or working with a “nobody” writer. Still, Emma’s determined to prove that love stories matter, even if she has to battle (and banter) her way through every draft to do it. What she doesn’t plan on? Their on-screen chemistry bleeding into real life, making her question everything she thought she knew about fiction, love, and herself.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

While I’ve kept things mostly spoiler-free, it’s hard to gush about The Rom-Commers without hinting at a few key moments. I promise not to ruin any of the big swoons or surprises—but if you haven’t read it yet and want to go in completely blind, maybe bookmark this post, grab your coffee, and come back once you’ve finished. ☕💗

My Thoughts

So this book came directly on the heels of The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston, and I was desperate for something lighthearted—a rom-com to lift my spirits. With a title like The Rom-Commers, I thought I was safe. Joke’s on me. While it absolutely had humor and heart, Katherine Center hit me right in the feels again. Between Emma’s family tragedy and Charlie’s own emotional scars, this story was another roller coaster—but one that left me smiling all the way through. It was definitely more uplifting than The Dead Romantics, even if it tugged at my heart in all the same ways.

Katherine Center crafted such a beautiful and layered character in Emma. She’s selfless, tender, and quietly strong—the kind of woman who sacrifices her dreams to care for her dad and make sure her sister gets the life she deserves. Once a promising screenwriter, she put her career aside after the accident that changed everything. Her love for her family radiates through every choice she makes, and when she meets Charlie, he unknowingly reignites that spark she buried long ago. His blunt honesty—calling out how she “blew her chance”—fuels her determination to prove him (and maybe herself) wrong.

At first, Charlie is all prickly edges and cynicism. He’s built high walls after being abandoned twice—once by his mother and again by his wife on the same day he received his diagnosis. But as they collaborate on the script, both professionally and emotionally, we watch those walls crumble piece by piece. Their banter is sharp and charming, the kind that makes you grin and kick your feet a little. And, of course, like any good rom-com, it delivers that inevitable third-act breakup before reminding us that love, vulnerability, and second chances are always worth the risk.

“Love is something you can learn. Love is something you can practice. It’s something you can choose to get good at.”
Katherine Center, The Rom-Commers

By the end, when Emma returns home to care for her dad and Charlie steps in quietly behind the scenes to help, it all comes full circle. It’s heartfelt, funny, and deeply satisfying without ever losing its warmth. The only drawback for me was the occasional language—it wasn’t overdone, but I still wish it hadn’t been there. And while there’s a near-spicy moment, Center keeps it clean, which I appreciate.

Katherine Center has officially joined my auto-buy list. If she writes it, I’m buying it—no questions asked.

Final Thoughts

The Rom-Commers was my first Katherine Center book, and now I completely understand the hype. She doesn’t just write love stories—she writes stories about resilience, rediscovery, and the quiet ways we find ourselves again after life falls apart. Emma and Charlie’s story is funny, heartfelt, and full of emotional depth, reminding me that the best rom-coms aren’t just about falling in love—they’re about choosing to believe in it.

This was exactly the kind of story I didn’t know I needed: a perfect blend of laughter, warmth, and a few well-earned sighs. Katherine Center has officially earned a permanent spot on my auto-buy list—if she writes it, I’m buying it. No questions asked.
